Mexico’s Unofficial Duck Mascot
Every World Cup needs one unexpected star, and Mexico may have found theirs in Merlin the duck. Yes, an actual duck. Wearing a tiny Mexico shirt and socks, Merlin went viral in Mexico City after joining the celebrations around the tournament. Forget tactical previews and xG models, this is the type of World Cup analysis we actually came for: small duck, big presence.
Curaçao’s Blue Main Character
Curaçao’s World Cup debut was always going to be emotional, but one fan took “Blue Wave” very literally. Painted head to toe in Curaçao blue, he looked less like someone going to a football match and more like the national spirit had downloaded itself into one human body. The result against Germany may not have gone Curaçao’s way, but in the stands, the island definitely understood the assignment.
The Turkish Fan Nobody Could Ignore
Turkey’s match against Australia produced one of the strangest fan visuals of the opening week. A supporter known online as Udi Neco appeared in the stands with his face fully painted black and a huge white beard, instantly becoming impossible to miss. It was weird, intense and definitely one of those moments where everyone watching at home paused for a second like: wait, what am I looking at? But there is also a meaning behind the look. He uses the black and white colours to embody the iconic shirt of his favourite football club, Beşiktaş. Udi Neco is a lifelong supporter of the Turkish team and uses his distinctive look to act as a “walking emblem” of the club known as the “Black Eagles”.
Mexico and Korea Become Best Friends
The World Cup is supposed to bring cultures together, and Mexico and South Korea fans took that very seriously. After both sides started the tournament with wins, clips spread of Mexican and Korean supporters dancing, celebrating and fully adopting each other for the day. There was “Gangnam Style,” Mexican chants and the kind of instant friendship that only makes sense at a World Cup.
Oranje Goes Left, Right, Everywhere
Last on the list of the best World Cup fan moments are the Dutch fans, who are not known for traveling quietly. Ahead of the Netherlands’ World Cup opener, the Oranje crowd brought “Links Rechts” to the streets, turning a normal pre-match gathering into a moving orange earthquake. Hundreds of fans bouncing from left to right is already funny enough. Add the fact that everyone nearby is either joining in or trying to understand what is happening, and you have classic tournament chaos.

The football has only just started, but the fans are already in knockout-stage form. Some brought colour, some brought culture, one brought a duck. Honestly, that is what makes the World Cup special. The matches matter, but the people around them often give the tournament its best stories.
