Last Saturday, 7 June, a unique golf event took place in the Amsterdamse Bos as part of the run-up to this year’s KLM Open (11 to 14 September). Warsteiner, the ‘official sponsor ‘ of the KLM Open, initiated this special event, organised under the name Warsteiner Night Golf Challenge.
For the occasion, the German premium beer brand transformed the Amsterdam forest into a golf course with a specially designed ‘par-3 course’. LED lighting and eye-catching ‘glow-in-the-dark’ golf balls guided players along the golf course in an exceptional setting made up of temporary tee boxes and ‘greens’.
As the sun went down, the event kicked off at 11:00 p.m. to finish at 2:00 a.m. with the last ball being dropped into the hole. In addition to several members of various golf associations, a diverse selection of ex-top athletes and celebrities, including Gerald Sibon (footballer), Taeke Taekema (former hockey player), Hidde van Warmerdam (presenter), Frits Barend, Barbara Barend and Richard Witschge (former football player) also took part.
The deserving winner of this one-time night golf event was Arjen Gerretsen. As his reward, he won one of the coveted Warsteiner Pro-Am spots for the KLM Open in September in which he and a professional golfer will compete against other Pro-Am teams on the European Tour in 9 holes. Of the more than 60 participants, only Richard Witschge managed to hit the boat in one shot.
As a sponsor of the KLM Open and the ‘official sponsor’ of the European PGA tour, the highest-level European golf tournament, Warsteiner wants to help make the sport of golf more accessible to a wider audience. Brand Manager Wilco Gad explains, “Warsteiner is traditionally involved in numerous international, premium events in the sporting world. The KLM Open is a part of that. We have noticed growing interest in the sport of golf, especially among young people. So since 2012, we have been incorporating golf into our innovative activations and have started integrating the sports into our campaign communications. We are now introducing the next chapter in this promising story: the Warsteiner Night Golf Challenge.”
