The latest Nike sneaker created in collaboration with the British music legend drops this week, making it an easy choice for our shoe of the week.
With differing colour schemes on each foot bringing the swoosh in both a red and a white get-up, these new Air Max from Skepta are the quite the statement. The silhouette itself is a mash-up, too, as the Air Max BW and Air Max 97 combine here to make one, original Air Max shape to Skepta’s liking.
The rapper has linked the mixing of styles and colours to his love for two cities – Paris and London. With the colour scheme of both the French flag and the British one in the detailing, his hometown and the French capital are paid tribute to, plus the padlock iconography used on the press shots are a nod to the Parisian tradition of ‘love locking’ too. His Vicous EP also has this padlock image and more often than not, he wears one around his neck as a chain, too.
“I wanted to hang the padlock on the shoe at the side and to lock it and give it to my friends,” the North London MC has said. “I remembered that’s what happens in Paris. That’s where you go and lock the love.”
Such is the tribute to Paris in these shoes that they are already available to buy in the French capital via SNKRS STASH, with users of their app able to find hidden locks to open access to their own purchase. However, for the rest of us, the sneaker will release at selected stockists on May 19.
