Man of the Weekend: Virgil van Dijk

A summer-long transfer saga made him one of the most wanted men in football – but now, he’s finally got his move, and it’s a record-breakingĀ one.

Virgil van Dijk has become the most expensive defender in football history, signing for Liverpool for a matter of 75 million British pounds. Leaving Southampton whom he tried to leave in the summer, Virgil has had to be patient and professional as he played and trained half a season on the South Coast.

But now he’s been set free, his talent is being spoken of worldwide. He’s seen as the man to sure up Liverpool’s defence and steer them towards being one of the top sides in the country and in Europe again.

Virgil’s first ‘appearance’ at Anfield

From humble beginnings at Groningen, VvD carved a reputation for himself in the Eredivisie as a solid defender with an eye for goal. He then moved to British shores with Scottish side Celtic, who paid 2.6 million for his services. He won Scottish league titles and cups with the Bhoys, but as he soon pulls on the Red shirt of Liverpool, his growth as a player is clear.

From a Groningen defender to a world record breaker, Virgil van Dijk has to be our man of the week as the year begins and the transfer window opens.

Happy New Year, Virgil.
