Man of the Weekend: Luuk de Jong

Luuk de Jong

Across Europe, it was a weekend in which many champions were crowned.

Over in England, champions-in-waiting Manchester City were finally confirmed as the winners of the Premier League for a third time in seven years, as their rivals, Manchester United stumbled to a one-nil home defeat to bottom club, West Bromwich Albion.

PSG’s title-clinching was a lot more straightforward, as they put seven goals past Monaco to win back their title from the holders. The 7-1 win puts 17 points between the Parisians and Monaco, re-asserting their dominance in the Ligue 1.

In the Netherlands, though, there was particular interest from us at Life After Football as our two cover stars went head-to-head in a match to decide the Eredivisie title. It was Ajax vs PSV. 2nd vs 1st. De Jong vs De Jong.

And it was an eventful game for both. PSV striker, Luuk, was able to double the league for the eventual champions in the first half and picked up a nasty hand injury in the second. With PSV dominant, the Eindhoven club began to relax whilst the Amsterdammers grew frustrated. So much so that the hosts saw two players given the red card, one of which was our other cover star, Siem.

So differing weekends for our footballing brothers on the cover of the ‘Next Chapter’ issue, but an exciting one nonetheless. And to Luuk, our Man of the Weekend and a newly crowned Eredivisie champion, congratulations!
