Sometimes football just makes you scratch your head.

PSV, the runaway leaders of the Eredivisie, have been marching to the title in recent weeks – even seeing off the holders, Feyenoord last month. As such, it’s looking like nothing can stand in their way as the season draws to a close.

So, this weekend when they were faced by Willem II, a relegation-threatened side without even a manager, many assumed it would be a routine win. But Willem and our Man of the Weekend, Fran Soler, had other ideas.

5-0 they won. FIVE. ZERO.

Phillip Cocu has since said he’s embarrassed by what happened to his side on Saturday, and such they were in for training on Sunday. But, praise must go to the feisty underdogs. and their hat-trick hero.

It was Soler who doubled the lead for the Tilburg team in the 59th minute – a moment that killed off PSV before Willem piled on the goals. Soler would grab another before injury time, in which a penalty saw his third and his side’s fifth goal of the day. A simply stunning result from one of the strugglers in the division against a side who had a 10-point lead at the top before the weekend.

It was PSV’s worst league defeat since 1964 and only their third of the season. For making the unthinkable a reality, our Man of the Weekend had to come from the Koning Willem II Stadion.
