Man of the Weekend: Diego Costa

Football in 2018 is already well under the way, as the opening weekend of the calendar year brought all the drama to the pitch.

FA Cup duties in England saw late-winners and upsets, as per, whilst in Serie A there was late drama, too – and off the pitch, a soap opera including a drunken video of Roma’s¬†Radja Nainggolan stole headlines. But in Spain is where our Man of the Weekend comes from as Diego Costa returned to Athletico Madrid in his own unique way.

The former Chelsea man had fallen out with his former employers, leaving them in spirit a long time ago but only officially at some point between the summer and winter transfer windows. So this weekend was his return to Atleti – and what a return it was.

In the 62nd minute, the Brazilian-born Spaniard was booked for a foul. An elbow to be precise, nothing to remarkable there. But six minutes later, his impact on the game would be felt, as he doubled his team’s lead with a goal on his return – a fairytale return for the big man. As you’d imagine, he and the crowd went wild, celebrating the return of their hero. But seconds later, Diego is sent off.

For over celebrating and entering the crowd, the referee showed Diego Costa a second yellow and, after some protest, off he went. So maybe not a dream return, but for the doing the most Diego Costa thing ever on a day that was all about him, the enigmatic striker has to be our Man of the Weekend.
