Earlier in the week we saw A$AP Rocky donning the cover of GQ, decked out in Lanvin and Acne accompanied with the title ‘The World’s Flyest Human’.
Rocky and GQ Fashion Director Mobolaji Dawodu’s collaboration also saw the A$AP Mob frontman in Jil Sander, JW Anderson and Gucci, name drops we’ve heard from Rocky before but as well as that, Kenzo, Jimmy Choo, Burberry and our favourite? Marni.
Dawodu’s dressing of Rocky in full Marni clothing can surely be considered as a nod of approval on the first men’s collection of Francesco Risso since becoming Creative Director at Marni. Taking over from a beloved owner such as Consuelo Castiglioni is always a situation that will draw the attention of the fashion world, and after conceiving Marni herself naturally Castiglioni had the license to shape the company as she saw fit. And so, “quirky” and “feminine” quickly became known descriptors of the Milan-based fashion house.
Marni’s loyal followers weren’t going to allow Risso to diverge from those pillars too quickly. It could be too early to tell but that early scepticism may have been unnecessary and it looks as though Marni is in safe hands with the ex-Prada man.
What he’s done is bring a laid back playfulness to the brand, using an eccentric colour palette, funky patterns and the elements of fur that you’d expect from Marni’s DNA, disrupted boldly by statement belts. This new coolness is carried off with wide legs, accentuated waists and beautifully structured fabrics that still manage to look effortless. Who better to announce the new Risso-led era of Marni to the masses than ‘The World’s Flyest Human’, buoyed by the chunky, controversy that is the Balenciaga Triple S sneaker in a look that’s typically too cosy.
We’d recommend checking out the rest of the GQ shoot below, you can see the rest of Marni’s FW’17 collection here, and you can even pick up some pieces of the collection at Menage Men’s Amsterdam location.
